Illdisposed: Burn me wicked

17/10/06  ||  Lord K Philipson

“Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark”, for real. We noticed that with Panzerchrist’s latest offering and it’s just as clear with this, the latest release by Illdisposed. Their previous album, “1800-Vindication”, was an insanely catchy slab of fresh millenium metal, to say the least. And here comes “Burn me wicked”, a disc completely lacking everything that made “1800” such a great album. There must be something in the water down there nowadays coz it seems like all the great Danish bands are losing touch with catchiness. Bring back fucken Invocator!

This album just pounds its way thru and thru, without leaving much of a lasting impression. It’s wellplayed and the production is killer, there’s no denying that, but those 2 factors hardly make an album. What about actual good tunes that makes you wanna rip shit apart? Like the ones they had on “1800”. There’s no “Jeff” here. There’s no “Now we’re history”. No “I believe in me”. None of that. The title track and “Shine crazy” would rank up as the most interesting songs here, though not being on par with the mentioned ones from “1800”. That’s definitely not good enough, guys.

This piece seems a bit less “commercial”, if you will, than “1800”, and obviously that wasn’t a very smart move since all those easy hooks and shit made this band so great at their previous effort. Sure, Bo’s vocals are ace, as we have grown used to (except on the latest Panzerchrist, where he completely changed his style for the worse), but that’s neither hardly enough to bring this disc up to Level Great. I can’t think of many albums that one would listen to solely for the vocals, you know. Blümchen is the exception to the rule.

For their 2 latest recordings, Illdisposed and Panzerchrist must have been drinking at the same place: The Mediocracy Tavern. They should both go back to their previous places and order the beverages they used to pit down their throats. Among other things, recording a track like “Illdispunk’d” sure shows Illdisposed need it.

What it comes down to is that these guys should be better than this.

6 bad shit in the Danish water out of 10.
